✨ Key Highlights
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has initiated its largest-ever black rhino ear-notching and tagging operation at Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary and Tsavo West National Park, targeting over 100 black rhinos. This 15-day campaign aims to enhance monitoring and security for the growing rhino population, which has surpassed 1,000 by 2024, up from a low of 381 in 1990.
- 100 black rhinos will be fitted with LoRaWAN eartags and VHF transmitters to improve population management and aid in achieving the goal of over 2,000 black rhinos by 2037.
- The initiative is led by KWS with support from partners under the Kenya Rhino Range Expansion (KRRE) Initiative.
- The operation addresses challenges of overcrowding and territorial conflicts by enabling the management of rhinos as a meta-population across 17 conservation sites and aims to restore rhinos across a 34,000 km² historic range.
