President William Ruto unveiled an ambitious Ksh 5 trillion plan during his State of the Nation address on Thursday, November 20, aimed at transforming Kenya over the next decade. The blueprint focuses on massive investments across four key sectors: human capital, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
- The plan allocates an increased education budget of over Ksh 700 billion, establishes a State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, and targets raising R&D funding to 2 percent of GDP from the current 0.8 percent.
- In agriculture, President Ruto outlined a water and irrigation strategy including 50 mega dams and thousands of microdams to bring 2.5 million acres under irrigation within 5 to 7 years, aiming to boost food security and agro-industrialization.
- To address energy development, Kenya plans to generate an additional 10,000MW using renewable sources within seven years.
- The transport sector will see a major upgrade with plans to rejuvenate 2,500 kilometers of highway for dualling and tarmac 28,000 kilometers of roads over the next 10 years, along with modernizing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the Mombasa and Lamu ports.
