Kenya has launched a billion-shilling initiative to develop a date palm industry across its arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), aiming to commercialize date farming as a climate-resilient crop and boost dryland economies.
- A high-level delegation, including Director General Dr. Bruno Linyiru of the Agricultural and Food Authority (AFA) and Chair Ahmed Abdullahi of the Council of Governors (COG), toured Kutch Farm in Kibwezi, Makueni County.
- The delegation observed date trees yielding up to 200 kilograms each and noted that Kenya currently produces only 1,100 kilograms of dates annually, importing over Ksh359 million worth.
- Date varieties like Medjool can generate Ksh1,200 per kilogram and annual profits exceeding Ksh3.4 million per hectare.
