The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), led by Secretary General Francis Atwoli, has issued an urgent directive for private security companies in Kenya to immediately implement the Ksh30,000 minimum wage for over 1.2 million private security guards.
- Atwoli highlighted widespread non-compliance, noting that out of 2,000 registered private security firms, only 30 were tax compliant, with 800 failing to comply with labor laws and pay minimum wages.
- The directive, issued on December 9, calls for action against non-compliant companies, a year after the High Court upheld the Ksh30,000 minimum wage.
- The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU) backed the demand, stating that COTU’s intervention addresses rampant underpayment and unfair labor practices across the sector.
