Caretakers in Kenya are among the highest-earning domestic and general labour workers, with monthly minimum wages significantly above those of most other household-based domestic workers, according to the latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

• The minimum gazetted monthly basic wage for caretakers in major cities is set at Ksh 33,416.8.
• The KNBS Statistical Abstract 2025 data highlights that caretaker wages are higher than those of security guards (e.g., Ksh 16,113.8 in Nairobi) and even surpass those of drivers (Ksh 27,352) and salespersons (Ksh 30,196.6).
• The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection defines a caretaker as someone responsible for building maintenance, distinct from a security guard.
• The domestic worker sector employed 120,153 people in 2024, with total annual earnings rising to Ksh 42.5 billion.
