Kenya has opened its sugar market to regional competition following the expiration of the COMESA Sugar Safeguard on November 30, 2025, ending 24 years of protected local producers. This move allows duty-free sugar imports from COMESA countries, increasing competition for domestic millers.

Kenya's annual sugar demand is approximately 1.1 million metric tonnes, while current domestic output is 815,454 metric tonnes.
The Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) stated that imports will be sourced from both COMESA and non-COMESA markets to stabilize supply and prices.
Sugarcane acreage expanded by 19.4 per cent to 289,631 hectares, contributing to a 76 per cent increase in production since 2022.
