Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has urged Members of Parliament to reclassify muguka as a harmful substance and remove it from the list of cash crops, citing its severe impact on youths and school-going children in Mombasa County. He highlighted that over 50% of hospital admissions in certain months are due to muguka, pledging full support for national action against drug trafficking.

Nassir called for legislative amendments to formally eliminate muguka from the schedule of cash crops and classify it as a harmful drug.
The governor noted that Mombasa consumes more muguka than areas where it is produced, with the product generating nearly Ksh1 million daily in levies for the county.
Muguka, a stimulant primarily grown in Embu County, supports approximately 65,000 farmers and has been previously protected by court decisions and political interventions, including one in June 2025 by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
