Nairobi County has extended its land rates waiver period, offering relief to property owners. The deadline to clear outstanding arrears and avoid penalties has been moved to January 9, 2026, from the initial December 31, 2025.

• The extension was prompted by an overwhelming number of landowners flocking to City Hall and sub-county offices to regularize their accounts.
• Receiver of Revenue Tiras Njoroge announced that the waiver scraps 100 percent of accumulated interest and penalties for those who pay within the new window.
• Only about 20 percent of landowners currently pay rates, leading to critical revenue shortages for essential services like healthcare and waste management, according to Governor Johnson Sakaja.
• This waiver is described as the "last soft landing" before strict enforcement of the National Rating Act for defaulters.
• Separately, a six-month amnesty for housing developers and property owners to regularize unauthorized developments without penalties was announced in December.
