Kenya has successfully completed trials for genetically modified (GM) cassava varieties, which are now awaiting commercial release. These varieties are engineered to be resistant to Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) and tolerant to drought, aiming to boost yields and enhance food security.
- The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) confirmed the disease-resistant and drought-tolerant cassava varieties passed final agronomic performance tests.
- Acting Director of Technical Services Josphat Muchiri of the NBA stated the varieties are ready for commercialization.
- The GM cassava was developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO).
- Trials were conducted in Mtwapa, Kandara, and Alupe.
