The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has launched a two-day inspection tour of airstrips undergoing rehabilitation in Kenya, aiming to enhance aviation safety and regional connectivity. The inspection commenced on Monday, January 19, 2026, beginning with Kerenga Airstrip in Kericho County, where significant upgrades are in progress.

  • The Kerenga Airstrip project involves extending the runway from one kilometre to 1.2 kilometres and widening it to 23 metres, with the surface upgraded from gravel to bituminous standards.
  • The inspection team, led by Board Chairman Hon. Caleb Kositany, also visited Itembe Airstrip in Bomet County, which is undergoing a phased upgrade after its last rehabilitation in 1990.
  • Phase One of the Itembe project includes the construction of a 1,000-metre by 18-metre asphalt runway and is expected to be completed within 15 months.
  • These upgrades follow the rehabilitation of Kakamega Airstrip, which began on December 1, 2025.
