Kenya's Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has strongly opposed efforts to merge human and veterinary medicine regulations, following a bill tabled in Parliament and the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
- CS Kagwe stated that the separation, in place since 2015, is based on science, food safety, and international regulatory standards, and merging them would compromise global best practices and contravene regulations from the East African Community (EAC) and COMESA.
- Speaking at the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) facility in Nairobi, Kagwe emphasized that human and animal medicines differ fundamentally in use, regulation, risks, and food system impact.
- The Agriculture CS vowed to engage Members of Parliament to ensure the bill is aborted, safeguarding the integrity of veterinary medicine regulation, especially given the current drought and disease pressure on livestock.
