Kenya has secured a KSh 2.1 billion loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to accelerate the development of the 35 MW OrPower Twenty-Two (OTTL) Geothermal Power Plant in the Menengai geothermal field, Nakuru County. This funding will help Kenya achieve its goal of expanding geothermal capacity and transitioning to 100% clean energy.
- The OTTL plant will help Menengai Phase I reach its full 105MW capacity, with KPLC purchasing all electricity under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
- AfDB’s Director of Energy Financial Solutions, Wale Shonibare, highlighted the role of public-private partnerships in unlocking long-term benefits for Kenya’s energy sector.
- The project, with a total estimated cost of KSh 11.8 billion, including an additional loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), will avoid 1.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over 25 years.
