The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $16.5 million (Sh2.64 billion) loan to boost Kenya's geothermal energy sector. This funding will support the construction of the new 35-megawatt OrPower Twenty-Two plant at the Menengai field, aiming to provide stable and clean electricity.
- The new plant, located north of Nakuru, is the third in the Menengai field's first phase, which will collectively produce 105 MW upon completion.
- AfDB's Director for Energy Financial Solutions, Wale Shonibare, highlighted the project as a successful public-private model, with Geothermal Development Company drilling wells and private firms operating the plants.
- The project is expected to generate approximately 301 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually and avoid an estimated 1.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over 25 years.
