A technical working group on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), led by chairperson Nancy Baraza, has recommended stringent measures to combat rising femicide cases in Kenya, including the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in Airbnbs and bed-and-breakfasts.
- The taskforce found a troubling pattern of femicides occurring in short-term accommodations, exploiting weak registration systems and lack of oversight.
- The recommendations, presented to President William Ruto, also include establishing a dedicated GBV and Femicide Police Unit and a National GBV and Femicide Response Fund, proposing at least Sh50 Billion from the 2026/2027 financial year.
- Additionally, the taskforce proposed amending the Penal Code to recognize femicide as a distinct criminal offense and a new Citizen Obligation Act for mandatory reporting of GBV cases.
