The Kenyan government announced a significant increase in funding for the Free Primary Education (FPE) programme, effective from the 2026/2027 financial year. This move aims to help schools cope with rising operational costs, marking the first such review since the programme's inception in 2003.

• The per-pupil allocation for primary schools will increase from Sh1,420 to Sh2,300 annually, as recommended by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER).
• Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed the increment, while assuring that funding for secondary schools, at Sh22,244 per learner annually, remains a priority.
• The increase was welcomed by stakeholders including the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and parents, who have long argued the previous allocation was insufficient.
