Kisumu County has deployed high-tech drones over the West Kano Irrigation Scheme to protect local rice farmers from an invasion of Quelea birds, a significant shift from traditional control methods. This aims to improve efficiency in protecting up to 800 acres of crops.

An estimated five million Quelea birds have invaded rice-growing schemes in Kisumu County, threatening substantial crop losses.
The operation is a joint effort between the National and County governments, with the State Department of Agriculture providing pesticides (Avicide) and the County Government procuring drone services.
Kenneth Onyango, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, stated this is the second invasion in three years, with drones previously used to spray and scare birds.
