Each year on January 25, thousands of Legion Maria faithful journey to Mawego, Homa Bay County, for an annual pilgrimage, a tradition rooted in a pivotal 1967 accident involving the church's founder, Baba Simeon Melchior Messiah (Ondeto).

The pilgrimage marks a special bond between faith, memory, and destiny at St Philip Rapar Mawego Church, dubbed ‘Dho ranga Polo’ (the gate to heaven).
On January 24, 1967, Baba Simeon was involved in a car accident near the church, transforming the site into sacred ground for the faithful.
The accident site is now marked by a structure and revered as a holy place where members often pause to pray, and his blood, collected after the accident, is believed to be preserved.
