Nairobi County workers are rejecting the new Social Health Authority (SHA) cover, stating it has left them uninsured as hospitals turn them away despite mandatory deductions from their payslips. The Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU), Nairobi Branch, has issued a one-week ultimatum to revert to a functional medical insurer.

Approximately 19,000 Nairobi County workers and their nearly 100,000 dependents could be affected by the failing SHA scheme.
Calvin Okello, branch secretary of KCGWU Nairobi Branch, stated that workers are forced to pay for treatment out of pocket due to the unreliability of SHA.
The union highlighted issues of limited services, delayed approvals, and rejection of SHA cards by healthcare facilities, likening deducted contributions to "putting your money in a bank and being told you cannot withdraw it."
