Kenyan rugby sevens player Kevin Wekesa has been named one of the winners of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Climate Action Awards 2025 for his leadership in promoting environmental sustainability through sport.
- Wekesa's Play Green project replaced single-use plastic bottles with reusable aluminum bottles for national rugby teams, saving nearly 1,000 plastic bottles every week.
- The project also partnered with over 40 schools across Kenya, combining tree planting with workshops on water conservation, waste management, and climate justice.
- This award comes just nine days before the HSBC Sevens 2 tournament in Nairobi, providing Wekesa a platform to expand Play Green nationwide.
