South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb accidentally distributed over $40 billion (Sh5.1 trillion) worth of Bitcoins to users as promotional rewards, leading to a sharp sell-off on its platform.

• The exchange intended to give out small cash rewards of 2,000 Korean won ($1.37 (Sh176.20)), but users received at least 2,000 Bitcoins each instead.
• Bithumb apologized for the error, which occurred on Friday, and stated it had recovered 99.7 percent of the 620,000 Bitcoins, valued at about $44 billion (Sh5.7 trillion).
• The incident affected 695 customers, and Bitcoin prices on Bithumb briefly slumped 17 percent to 81.1 million won before recovering.
