A South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, Bithumb, accidentally distributed over $40 billion worth of bitcoin to customers instead of a small cash reward. The platform quickly realized the error and managed to recover most of the mistakenly sent tokens within minutes.
- Bithumb intended to give customers 2,000 South Korean won (approximately $1.37) but instead transferred 2,000 bitcoins.
- The company restricted trading and withdrawals for 695 affected customers within 35 minutes of the glitch and recovered 99.7% of the 620,000 bitcoins.
- The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) will investigate the incident, and Bithumb CEO Lee Jae-won vowed cooperation and offered 20,000 won ($13.66) in compensation to all affected customers, along with other measures.
