Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru launched the construction of a modern 30-bed maternity wing at Mutithi Health Centre in Mwea, supported by the M-Pesa Foundation. This project aims to significantly improve maternal and newborn healthcare by providing essential services closer to home for residents.
- The 62.5 million health facility will feature an operating theatre and newborn unit, reducing referrals and easing congestion in higher-level hospitals.
- Governor Waiguru highlighted that since 2017, maternal mortality in Kirinyaga County has reduced from 88 to 55 deaths per 100,000 live births, and skilled birth attendance has increased from 87% to 92%.
- The groundbreaking coincided with a large-scale free medical camp, where the M-Pesa Foundation sponsored 100 residents for one year of Social Health Authority (SHA) premiums.
