The National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee on Social Services Administration and Agriculture (PIC-SSAA) has expressed concern after an audit revealed that the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) operates 191 active bank accounts. KALRO officials were summoned to address audit queries spanning the 2014/2015 to 2021/2022 financial years.

  • KALRO Finance Director David Wachira stated that most of the 191 accounts are for donor-funded projects from entities like the World Bank and the European Union, with others supporting 52 centers nationwide.
  • Lawmakers also questioned a Ksh215 million discrepancy in the valuation of a research building, with Director General Dr Patrick Ketiem attributing it to timing differences.
  • KALRO recently recruited 224 staff members to address succession gaps and improve efficiency.
  • The Committee directed KALRO to provide comprehensive land ownership documents, updated asset valuation reports, and supporting records within one week.
