The Zimbabwean Cabinet has approved draft legislation proposing significant constitutional changes allowing President Emmerson Mnangagwa to extend his term from five years to seven years, potentially remaining in office until 2030. The proposed law also seeks to change how the president is elected, shifting from a direct popular vote to an election by parliament.

The proposed changes would allow President Mnangagwa, currently 83, to stay in power until 2030, past his current scheduled departure in 2028.
The Justice Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, stated the bill will be sent to the speaker of parliament and gazetted before parliamentary consideration.
ZANU-PF, the ruling party, holds a two-thirds majority in the lower house of parliament, enabling it to change the constitution.
