Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of failing vulnerable communities in northern Kenya, specifically regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Gachagua claims government promises made in 2023 remain unfulfilled, despite worsening hunger, thirst, and disease, labeling Ruto's pledges as "lies bottled in promises running into trillions of shillings."
He cited a recent Sh4 billion allocation to 23 arid counties, which he stated translated to roughly Sh1,200 per person, less than half the United Nations minimum food basket of Sh2,700.
The political attack comes as the government states it is scaling up efforts to address a deepening drought affecting 3.3 million Kenyans, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announcing Sh6 billion released between December 2025 and January 2026, and an additional Sh4 billion earmarked for immediate disbursement.
The Cabinet approved an additional Sh4.1 billion to scale up drought response interventions, with conditions in Mandera, Wajir, Kwale, and Kilifi counties in the Alarm phase and acute malnutrition affecting over 810,000 children.
