The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has issued a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory for several African and global destinations, including Kenya's regional neighbours, due to heightened security risks.

• A Level 4 advisory is the highest warning, meaning travel is not recommended for any reason due to dangerous local conditions or limited U.S. government assistance.
• The list includes Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), Central African Republic (CAR), Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Niger, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Yemen.
• The advisories are continuously updated based on evolving threats such as civil unrest, kidnapping, terrorism, violent crime, and political instability.
• In August last year, the U.S. issued a terror alert for Americans in Kenya, citing persistent threats from the extremist group al-Shabaab.
