A new report by Citizen Lab indicates that Kenyan authorities likely used Israeli digital forensic technology from Cellebrite to extract data from activist Boniface Mwangi's phone while it was in police custody in July 2025. The report, published on Tuesday, February 17, has ‘high confidence’ that phone extraction tools capable of unlocking and copying data were deployed.
The technology, developed by Cellebrite, can extract sensitive data such as messages, call logs, emails, photos, and financial records.
The circumstances surrounding Mwangi's phone, which was returned without its password protection, are consistent with the use of Cellebrite’s extraction tools, as confirmed by traces of the application com.client.appA found on the device.
