Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is set to undergo a significant upgrade that includes the closure of Terminal 1E and restrictions on private car access to the main terminal area.

• The first stage of the upgrade aims to immediately relieve pressure on existing facilities, with a new terminal and runway planned by 2029 to raise capacity to 22.3 million passengers annually.
• Key entities involved include the private firm hired to develop the masterplan and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).
• Under the new plan, only airport taxis and ride-hailing cabs will be permitted into the terminal area, while private cars will be redirected to the long-term car park for drop-offs and pick-ups.
