Scientists are warning of a potential resurgence of a dangerous coronavirus strain in East Africa following the identification of a new bat-borne virus capable of infecting human cells.

• The newly identified virus, CcCoV-KY43, was found in heart-nosed bats across Kenya, northern Tanzania, and parts of eastern Sudan.
• The research involved collaboration between UK scientists and researchers from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KeMRI).
• While laboratory tests show the virus can bind to human lung cell receptors, researchers stress there is currently no evidence of human infection.
