Despite government crackdowns and animal welfare efforts, illegal donkey slaughter and trade in meat and skins are on the rise in Kenya, risking public health and decimating the donkey population.

• An estimated 40% decline in Kenya's donkey population occurred between 2016 and 2019.
• Authorities recently intercepted a lorry in Kajiado West containing meat from 30 donkey carcasses and recovered thousands of skins in Kitui.
• A report by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation and Brooke East Africa estimated income foregone by donkey owners and users at Sh28.3 billion between April 2016 and December 2019.
