The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is set to impose significant financial penalties on mobile operators, including Safaricom and Airtel, for failing to meet new, stricter Quality of Service (QoS) standards for voice calls and internet speeds.

Telcos now face fines of up to 0.2% of their annual turnover if they fail to achieve a new 90% QoS threshold, up from the previous 80%.
Both Safaricom and Airtel, along with Telkom, currently fall short of the new 90% benchmark, with potential fines calculated in the hundreds of millions of Kenyan Shillings.
The CA will implement a county-based enforcement model, preventing operators from masking poor rural coverage with strong national averages.
