Kenyan teachers are facing an insurance cover gap due to a Sh5.3 billion funding shortfall for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), leaving them exposed despite ongoing deductions for health schemes.

• A funding gap of Sh5.3 billion for comprehensive insurance cover for over 400,000 teachers.
• The National Assembly Committee on Education, chaired by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, highlighted the funding deficit in a report.
• Teachers are being deducted from their pay for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF), while also facing a Sh4.4 billion debt owed to Minet-Kenya from a previous scheme.
