The U.S. is pledging $50 million (Ksh6.5 billion) to fund research and development for medical countermeasures against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has tragically claimed 139 lives.

The funding is directed to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) for laboratory studies, clinical trials, and manufacturing.
This comes as the outbreak has expanded to Uganda, with cases rising to 689 in the DRC.
Kenya remains Ebola-free but is on high alert, having halted construction of a U.S.-backed quarantine facility at Laikipia Airbase following a High Court order.
