Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital (MKRH) has officially begun operating independently following its handover from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, on July 2.

MKRH is now an autonomous State corporation, strengthening Kenya's national referral healthcare system.
The transition aims to expand access to specialised healthcare services outside Nairobi and improve management of non-communicable diseases.
The hospital's Strategic Plan 2025–2030 was also launched, outlining priorities in specialised care, education, and research.
