The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to overhaul its tax filing system, moving away from Excel-based submissions to a simplified, web-based platform aimed at enhancing taxpayer experience and system efficiency.

The KRA is retiring the Excel-based income tax return filing for a web-based system, as mandated by the Finance Act 2026.
Key changes include eliminating Excel sheet downloads and the validation process, alongside staggered filing deadlines: April 30 for individuals and June 30 for companies.
These reforms, championed by Josephine Mugure, KRA Chief Manager for Policy and Tax Advisory, also involve upgrading the iTax system and expanding support via WhatsApp and the Shuru virtual assistant.
