For decades, Mohamed Salim Ahmed, a veteran diver from Mombasa, has risked his life in numerous maritime disasters and rescue operations across East Africa, yet he feels unrecognized by the state.

• He participated in critical rescue missions including the 1994 MV Mtongwe ferry disaster and the 1996 MV Bukoba tragedy, retrieving bodies and saving lives in perilous conditions.
• The former Kenya Navy diver, now the lead diver for the Mombasa Municipality Rescue Team, has never received formal state recognition or awards for his service.
• Despite the lack of formal acknowledgement, Mr. Salim remains proud of his service and is focused on continuing to make an impact where his skills are needed.
