The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced an increase in electricity charges by approximately Ksh4.16 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), effective for meter readings taken in September.
- The primary driver of this increase is the Fuel Energy Cost Charge of Ksh3 per unit, followed by the Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment of Ksh1.14 per unit.
- EPRA is implementing these revised charges to cover fuel costs for thermal power plants and fluctuations in the foreign exchange market.
- New regulations also affect renewable energy generators, with net metering customers now credited for only half of exported power, and unapproved electricity feeding into the grid being billed at the base tariff.
