Kenya Spends Ksh.400M on Food Imports as Kericho Leaders Dispute KTDA Tea Bonuses - October 2025
Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Mugaa stated that Kenya imports over Ksh.400 million worth of food annually, highlighting the potential of the Galana-Kulalu project to achieve food self-sufficiency. On a regional level, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has introduced new strategies to combat hunger in the Horn of Africa. Meanwhile, within Kenya's agriculture sector, Kericho leaders, including Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and Governor Dr. Erick Mutai, have publicly criticized the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA). They are contesting what they view as unjustified disparities in tea bonus payments affecting farmers in the East and West of the Rift Valley.
