Teachers Threaten Strike Over Pay Delays, SHA Cover Crisis Ahead of School Reopening - April 2026
Kenyan teachers are threatening to go on strike just days before schools are scheduled to reopen due to delayed salary payments and a crisis in their SHA (Superannuation Health Assurance) cover. The Kenya Comprehensive Schools Headteachers Association is urging headteachers to enhance school infrastructure to support the Competency-Based Education curriculum. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is investigating head teachers accused of submitting false learner data during a verification exercise to unfairly influence capitation distribution. The Cotu union is demanding the immediate implementation of agreed-upon salary increments, while President William Ruto continues to inaugurate new university campuses despite significant outstanding debts owed to existing higher education institutions.
