17 Pilgrims Killed in Salama Road Crash - October 2026

A tragic road accident in Salama has claimed the lives of 17 pilgrims while they were travelling from Mombasa to Subukia. The Sultan Hamud Hospital morgue in Makueni County received 17 bodies as relatives gathered to identify their loved ones. This year's Catholic pilgrimage at the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County was overshadowed by the tragedy. Kenya's National Prayer Day for Catholic faithful was marked by grief as the 17 deaths occurred while faithful were traveling to attend the event. The Mombasa county government will cover the burial expenses for the 17 pilgrims who died in the accident in Makueni County.
