Hospitals Warn of Collapse Over Unpaid Bills from Social Health Authority (SHA) and NHIF - August 2025

Private and religious hospitals in Kenya are facing a threat of closure due to billions of shillings in unpaid claims from the Social Health Authority (SHA). The Rural Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA) has issued a severe warning about the impending collapse of Kenya's national healthcare system. This warning stems from substantial unpaid bills by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). Additionally, the Muungano wa Hospitali za Kibinafsi (Private Hospitals Association) has lodged complaints regarding alleged payment discrimination by SHA.
