SHA Accused of Diverting Sh7.6bn as Hospitals Warn of Shutdown - August 2025

Private hospitals in Kenya are on the verge of a nationwide shutdown due to delayed compensation from the government, primarily under the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the now-defunct NHIF. This situation has pushed many facilities to the brink of closure, threatening healthcare access. Separately, former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development JB Muturi has accused the SHA of financial misconduct. Muturi alleged the authority diverted Sh7.6 billion intended for 3,297 families of deceased and injured civil servants. The funds were allegedly redirected to other government agencies.

  • Brian Lishenga, Chairman of the Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association of Kenya (RUPHA), issued the warning, representing 700 private and faith-based hospitals.
  • Despite a directive from President William Ruto to settle pending bills and a monthly reimbursement schedule, only Ksh50 billion (53 percent) of Ksh93 billion claimed has been reimbursed since SHA's inception in October of last year.
