Safaricom Expands 5G Home Internet Availability and Upgrades Plans - October 2025

Safaricom has partnered with Naivas Supermarket to make its 5G Home Internet devices available across all Naivas outlets in Kenya. The 5G routers are now being sold for KES 2,999 in all Naivas supermarkets nationwide as part of an aggressive strategy to make 5G a dominant home internet choice. This retail expansion coincides with both companies' anniversaries. In addition to expanding availability, Safaricom has upgraded its entry-level 5G Home Internet plan in response to user feedback. The plan's speeds have been increased to 15Mbps and the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) has been raised to 450GB, all without a price hike.

Key Highlights

Safaricom has upgraded its entry-level 5G Home Internet plan, increasing speeds and data limits without a price hike in response to user feedback.

  • The base plan now offers 15Mbps (up from 10Mbps) and a 450GB Fair Usage Policy (FUP) (up from 250GB) for KES 3,000 per month.
  • This adjustment makes the plan more suitable for moderate home internet usage, covering activities like HD streaming, online gaming, and remote work.
  • The update positions Safaricom to better compete, though a gap still exists for a mid-range option around KES 2,000 to rival Airtel's 15Mbps 5G Home plan.

This aggressive strategy aims to make 5G a dominant home internet choice, potentially cannibalizing Safaricom's own Home Fibre service.

  • The 5G router, which previously cost over KES 20,000, is now priced at KES 2,999, featuring Wi-Fi 6 and a 3-4 hour built-in battery.
  • This retail expansion follows a similar partnership with Quickmart earlier in the year, placing devices in over 171 supermarket outlets.
  • Safaricom’s 5G Wi-Fi offers 50 Mbps with a 1.5 TB FUP for KES 4,000, while Home Fibre provides 30 Mbps with a 1 TB FUP for KES 4,100, making 5G a more competitive option.
  • The main "gotcha" for the entry-level KES 2,999 10Mbps 5G plan is a small 250GB data cap, likely pushing users to upgrade to higher allowances.
