Kenya Railways has announced further demolitions in Nairobi as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following the recent destruction of properties belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi. The corporation is repossessing land for new railway infrastructure vital for the tournament.

• The demolitions are to pave the way for a new railway line connecting Nairobi Central Station to Nyayo National Stadium and Talanta Stadium.
• Properties linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, including a car yard and restaurant, were demolished near Nyayo National Stadium on the night of Tuesday, January 13.
• Kenya Railways states it issued prior notices to all encroachers and will continue demolishing unwanted structures at the encroacher's risk and cost.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi inspected his demolished carwash and other businesses on Douglas Wakiiuri Road (formerly Aerodrome Road) in Nairobi, after a dawn demolition operation flattened multiple structures and vehicles opposite Rubis Nyayo Stadium.

• The demolition occurred around 3 am, destroying dozens of cars, a carwash, a carpet cleaning business, and a restaurant.

Irungu Nyakera, Patron of the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party and an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has raised alarms over an alleged plot by Nairobi County to repossess market stalls after a contentious data collection exercise.

• The dispute arose from a data collection exercise launched by county officials on December 8, 2025, which occurred when many traders had closed for the festive season.
• The Nairobi Market Traders’ Association lodged a formal protest in a letter dated December 22, 2025, to Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing a lack of notice and “bad faith and illegal” practices.
• The Association warned that registering empty stalls as “ghost stalls” and employees as owners could lead to “conflict and confusion” and affect “smooth operations” in the markets.
