Kenyan Opposition Rallies Disrupted Amid Political Tensions - February 2026

Political tensions are rising in Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Elections. A political rally at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega was disrupted by teargas, but Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna defiantly declared the meeting would continue. A faction of the ODM party, known as 'Linda Mwananchi', led by former Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo, held a rally criticizing President Ruto's administration. Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka publicly accused the police of complicity with individuals causing disruption at opposition political rallies. Meanwhile, Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders aligned with UDA have firmly stated that the Deputy President position is not subject to negotiation despite ODM overtures. Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga stated that the ODM party effectively exited the Azimio coalition some time ago and is now formalizing this shift.
