A nationwide matatu strike is underway in Kenya, escalating protests against rising fuel prices with the Mt Kenya region emerging as a new hotspot for anti-government demonstrations. In Busia, unrest continues into a second day of confrontations between protestors and police. Traders in Githurai and Kitengela are counting losses of millions of shillings after their businesses were raided by thugs during protests. Governor James Orengo has also protested the alleged arbitrary withdrawal of his security detail by police, amidst the broader climate of unrest.
