Opposition leaders demand security for June 25 Gen Z protest commemoration - June 2026
Kenyan opposition leaders are demanding adequate security and freedom for participants in the upcoming June 25 commemoration, which will honor young people who lost their lives during protests against the Finance Bill two years ago. Former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has urged for peaceful demonstrations ahead of the planned June 25 protest anniversary by Gen Z. Governor Orengo has criticized President Ruto's remarks regarding the Gen Z protests. Meanwhile, President William Ruto has urged Kenyan youth to be responsible for their actions and avoid causing unrest during demonstrations. Opposition leaders have also joined the families of Gen Z victims amidst the nationwide matatu strike.
