A family from Loitoktok, Kajiado County, is in anguish as their one-year-old son is being detained at Abyan Hospital in Eastleigh over an outstanding bill of Ksh.3 million, after an ambulance diverted them from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

• The child was initially taken for corrective surgery at a hospital in Loitoktok, where the operating surgeon, Henry Kiprono, admitted to demanding Ksh.5,000 for medical supplies.
• The surgery reportedly went wrong, leading to the child overdosing on anesthesia, his heart stopping twice, and slipping into a coma; a referral fee of Ksh.50,000 was then demanded to initiate transfer to KNH.
• Upon arrival at Abyan Hospital, parents Esther Ulavu and her husband have been barred from seeing their son, with an administrator identified as Abdi, seen on video assaulting Esther for attempting to see her child.
