The Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) experienced a decline in passenger numbers during the first three months of 2025, shedding 2,082 passengers compared to the same period in 2024. Despite this dip, the SGR saw increased revenues, attributed to a fare hike implemented in January 2024.
- Total passengers for January-March 2025 were 529,591, down from 531,673 in 2024.
- The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reported SGR revenues of Ksh936,299,658 for Q1 2025, an increase from Ksh880,819,035 in Q1 2024.
- The decline in passengers has been a trend since 2023, with passengers dropping by 10.3 percent in 2024 following a 50 percent fare hike.
