A new report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reveals that Kenyan women in rural areas are twice as likely to own homes compared to their urban counterparts. This data, drawn from the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), highlights significant disparities in economic empowerment between genders and geographic locations.

• Only 32.8% of Kenyan women own houses, significantly less than the 44.6% of men.
• The KNBS report indicates that just 28.5% of Kenyan women hold bank accounts, compared to 40% of men.
• Despite education gains, with secondary school completion for women in marriages nearly doubling from 20.6% to 38.9% between 2014 and 2022, paid employment for this group slightly decreased.
